In Town

Although many of Chatham County’s neighborhoods are situated in more rural settings, several subdivisions are located in or close to city centers.

Pittsboro, the county seat, is a small town with a strong sense of community and a modern sensibility. Established in 1785, its historic main street is filled with family-owned shops, antique stores, and eateries, and is often the site of special events such as First Sunday and the Pittsboro Fall Festival.

Pittsboro is also home to the Central Carolina Community College main campus. The school has made a commitment to be “a leader in sustainable technologies,” offering programs in green building, biofuels, sustainable agriculture, ecotourism, and a natural chef culinary program.

Chapel Hill, home to the University of North Carolina, was named the most Livable City in America (under 100,000 population) at the 2009 US Mayors Conference in June. It’s a thriving college town with a strong arts and music scene along with shopping, museums, and a number of educational and recreational opportunities.

Although most of Chapel Hill is located in Orange County, its southern boundary extends into Chatham County. Homes in this area offer the convenience of living near the larger town along with lower taxes and home prices. Subdivisions on 15/501 between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro include:
